Tents
for Tourists
In February 2007 Acorus was approached by a farmer in
Lancashire in respect of a proposed planning application
for the siting of 7 ‘Feather Down Farm’ tents
on his land. The farmer had come across the ‘Feather
Down Farms’ tents company and had inquired about establishing
a site on his land. The principle involves the farmer providing
the site and basic on farm facilities and the Feather Down
Farms company providing the tents and the bookings. The
farmer in recognition of his investment (i.e. the site and
the services provided, namely showers, shop, bike hire,
farm tour etc) is given a percentage of the visitor revenue.
The intention was to get the enterprise up and running for
Spring 2007, so a planning application was submitted on
1 March and the application was approved in mid April.
The farmer has enjoyed a full season of the Feather Down
Farm tents, which have been dismantled and will be erected
again for Easter 2008.
Basic facilities and shop were provided at the farm adjacent
to the tents. However, planning permission has been secured
for the conversion of a traditional single storey building
within the farmyard to provide the ancillary facilities
for the tourism enterprise. With planning permission in
place, a buildings regulations application submitted and
a builder at the ready, the intention is for the building
to be completed for the visitors in Easter (2008).
