Buildings for beef, sheep and pigs will differ considerably in their respective design requirements but the following factors provide a starting point in developing the design brief.

- Ventilation and environment
- Waste management
- Feeding and forage
- Vehicle movements
- Health and safety in operation
This list is not exhaustive and a number of the issues will be determined by criteria specified by assurance based schemes and groups. Detailed knowledge of these requirements is essential to achieving a viable design.
