Pigs & Poultry

Certain pig and poultry developments fall into schedule 1 i.e an Environmental Statement must be prepared. These cases are installations for the intensive rearing of poultry or pigs with more than:-

a. 85000 places for broilers of 60000 places for hens
b. 3000 places for production pigs (over 30kg) or
c. 900 places for sows.

Other intensive livestock installations (can include free range) generally fall into schedule 2 with a guidance threshold of 500m² of floor area. As EIA can only be requested if significant environmental effect are anticipated.
